Survey Results: Backyard Hens in the Township
Please be advised that Council has passed an Interim Urban Hen Amendment By-law to allow eligible urban residential property owners to keep up to six hens for personal use.
This temporary by-law provides a clear and responsible framework for residents interested in keeping hens while the Township continues its broader review of the Animal By-law. Roosters are not permitted.
The requirements are intended to support animal welfare, good neighbour relations, and clean, safe residential neighbourhoods. Hen owners must provide appropriate housing and care, keep hens securely contained, manage feed and waste properly, and ensure that hens do not create a nuisance or attract wildlife.
Council’s decision reflects feedback received from the community and offers an opportunity for responsible urban hen ownership under defined conditions.
The interim provisions will remain in effect until a new Animal By-law is adopted by Council, unless amended or repealed earlier.
